Statement from 10th District legislators on I-5 Skagit River bridge collapse

The following joint statement was issued today by Sen. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor, Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, and Rep. Dave Hayes, R-Camano Island.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who were affected by the collapse of the I-5 bridge – especially those who were injured and the first responders who ensure our safety every day. The collective response was amazing. We are so thankful for these extraordinary efforts and deeply grateful that lives were spared.

“It is essential that we address the hardships and inconveniences of those adversely impacted. We participated in conference calls today with the governor’s office, other lawmakers, transportation leaders, and the chairwoman of the National Transportation Safety Board. The ongoing partnerships with federal, state and local officials give us confidence that the proper steps are being taken at this point. This includes investigating what happened, finding out what temporary solutions are available for the safe and effective movement of commuters and commerce, and mitigating potential problems for our local communities, businesses and schools.

“Like those we represent, we want answers. We want to know what, if anything, could have been done to prevent this situation. These answers will ultimately guide our solutions and identify who is accountable. We ask for your patience and understanding as these issues are considered.

“In the long term, we will need to decide, as a state, what the best option is for rebuilding this important bridge. This includes design, costs, financing and other steps that will require legislative involvement and citizen input. We will continue to be an integral part of this process and hope you will join us in this endeavor.

“Please know that you can contact us if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions as our communities recover from this event. We also encourage you to utilize the state Department of Transportation’s Web site when navigating the impacted area. Updated information can be found at: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/.”
