Rep. Norma Smith sponsors Greenbank teen as page in state House

Island County native Willow Wolfkill-Yaple traveled to Olympia in early March to serve as a page in the state House of Representatives. She was sponsored by her 10th District Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton.

Willow had the unique opportunity to serve as a page with her twin sister, Violet. In her free time, she plays the marimba, which she has been mastering for the past four years.

"Willow was a fantastic page, and I am honored to have had the opportunity to sponsor her," said Smith. "She is a bright individual, and it's wonderful to see how she has expressed such an interest in her state government."

As part of her page duties, Willow learned to navigate the many buildings on the Capitol campus while delivering messages and documents to legislators and staff. She also participated in opening ceremonies at the start of each day of session and assisted representatives on the House floor during floor action.

Willow also attended page school every day to understand the operations and actions of the Legislature. As a culminating project, a fellow page and her introduced a mock bill that would require police officers to ask residents if they would like them to turn off their body camera when inside their home.

To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. Pages earn $35 per day while serving in the program.
